The
Fellows Council was established (January 2006) to foster an
interactive environment that allows fellows and graduate students
at Joslin to exchange experience and information, discuss and
resolve issues, actively participate in planning and facilitating
Joslin educational programs, and also socialize among their
peers.
The Fellows Council consists of a representative from each
of the 11 Joslin research sections. Sections with more than
15 fellows have two representatives on the council. The Fellows
Council also includes one pre-doctoral graduate student representative.
The Council meets at least 3 times per year with called
meetings as necessary and works collaboratively with the
Director of Research, the Office of Research Fellow Affairs
and other Joslin leadership.
Council Responsibilities
1. Create Community: The Council is responsible
for leading a support network for the Joslin fellows: to
open a dialogue among fellows to address issues and help
identify and develop activities, both social and academic,
that would benefit fellows.
2. Representation: The Council serves as
the “voice” of the fellows to the Office of Research
Fellow Affairs and Joslin leadership to address topics of
concern to fellows.
3. Lectures: The Council will also be responsible
for four seminars in the Longwood Area Diabetes/Metabolism
Research Seminar Series each year. Lecture responsibilities
include identifying, inviting and hosting expert speakers
from outside Joslin.
4. Training and Enhancement: The Council
will work with the Office of Research Fellow Affairs to organize
programs, including mini-courses and self-education activities,
that will help fellows become more successful, i.e. seminars
on manuscript publication, stats, effective presentation
development and delivery.
